3 Degrees of Felt takes the existing canonical space of the Guggenheim and attempts to transform the experience through a material intervention which mediates subject, object, and space. In order to accommodate the 450 artifacts of the Aztec Empire, we designed a singular linear element, that undulates to create surplus surface area and display areas within its folds.
Creating a continuous experience along the ramp and focusing on the experience of the perimeter and periphery, as opposed to the center, the project creates a smooth non-uniform display system that organizes the artifacts at their appropriate scales while highlighting the curatorial themes and sub-themes of the exhibition.
Made of a dark thick felt, the walls transform the classic white wall interior, absorbing light and sound transforming the space into a deep and mute envelope.
